WAITING FOR THE PRESIDENT ELECT
This was a new version performed by Billy at The Bottom Line, New York at 00.01 01/01/01
It may have been Camelot for Hillary & Bill
But now their days are numbered
And the Right have had their fill
And they're calling on young George Bush
To bring respect back to the office
And they're hoping to high heaven
That nobody will notice
That the hereditary principle
Has one fundamental flaw
In that the first born may not be as smart as the Pa
In the dead heat down in Florida
Challenges are mounted
It's not the right to vote that counts
But the right to have that vote counted
The Supreme Court has stayed up all night
And they're fiddling with the sums
It's a victory for the white men with guns
The Supreme Court has spoken
And Dubya is anointed
Barely one in four of voting age is disappointed
The other 75% are quite pleased with the selection
Yea, the cynics have won the election
There's a loser in The White House
And the Constitution's blighted
You can still call yourself The States
But you'd better drop that word United
You need a bipartisan Capitol Hill
If you wanna get laws passed
But they wouldn't know bipartisanship
If it jumped up and bit 'em in the arse
The invites have been sent out
The podiums erected
Is it rude of me to point out
The President Elect was not elected
You can be active with the activists
Or complacent with the media
While you're waiting for the President Elect
Say goodbye to democracy
Hello to lynch mob mentality
Waiting for the President Elect
The outcome's left the country riven
Come back Ross Perot it's all forgiven
Waiting for the President Elect
The Republic is unsinkable
But Dubya is the iceberg, I'm afraid
Waiting for the President Elect
In a perfect world we'd all vote
That's it - no funny punchline
Waiting for the President Elect
When I say that thing with the inverted commas
You all think it's fucking funny
But it's not so funny when I say "Democracy"
